I had my eye on Mojo for quite a while....
I had originally purchesed a leopard gecko when I saw this cute little bearded dragon. I didn't have the money to buy her but I would go into the pet store where I get supplies and food for Drac and for my pythons. She was very tame but wasn't very active, and to my horror, was housed in a display tank with 3 box turtles!! I couldn't get the gecko I bought to eat and asked several times to trade him for the beardie, an even swap, but was denied. I was very fustrated with the gecko so about 3 weeks after I bought the gecko I went back and noticed them giving calcium to the beardie. I was told she had metabolic bone disease. Her back legs weren't working too well. 2 days later, I went back, determined to either get my money back for the gecko, or take the beardie home. I evesdropped (Yes I am a woman!!) on the owner talking to a man who had bought the beardie but with the MBD, he wasn't able to properly care for her. I watched in anger as the owner traded the man a Uromastix for the beardie. When the man left, I announced to the owner that I wouldn't leave his store until I had what I wanted. The even trade...the leopard gecko for the beardie. Since she was "defective" and needed extra care, I felt I had laid my cards down right so to speak. He finally relented!! So I rushed home, got the gecko, cleaned the tank thouroughly, and went back. After spending MORE money, buying a new UVB light, a fixture, a daylight heat bulb and substrate, I took her home!! Her poor legs were hardly working and she had to sit there and wait for the crickets to run passed her face before she could catch them. 3 days later though, she was moving more, eating vegetables, and catching crickets better. Her poop was real runny so I took her to the vet. She had parasites so I was sent home with some medication. The vet said her weight was pretty good, she was about 6 months old and her MBD was reversable!! I was so happy and felt so proud that I was able to stand up for my rights as a customer and her rights as a pet needing a good home!! Today she is 100% the perfect beardie! I named her Mojo (In the Anne Rice vampire novels, Mojo was LeStats german shepherd..but I dug the name!). Her back legs work great and she is happy and healthy!! Pet store owners I don't look too kindly on sometimes. Please, when you buy an animal from stores like these, take your pets to a good vet for a full checkup!! Just ask Mojo...she is truly a case in point!!
*UPDATE* Mojo is a male and he unfortunatly has a prolapsed hemipene which now is going to be removed surgically. This poor guy has been through so much but I know in my heart that he will be ok once this procedure is done and I have him back home. |
